2021 Festival Program

Event 1: Papa & Sons

The Sydney Consort, Alana Blackburn (recorder), Stan W Kornel (baroque violin and viola d’amore), and Monika Kornel (harpsichord), perform works by J. S. Bach, W. F. Bach, J. C. Bach and Handel.

Event 2: Channeling Bach

David Drury performs organ works by Buxtehude and Bach and then improvises on themes submitted by local students.

Event 3: The German Recorder and Friends

Steve Thorneycroft and Alana Blackburn perform works for recorder and guitar by E. G. Baron, Scarlatti, S. L Weiss and a premiere of an original work by Thorneycroft, 5 Sketches on BACH.

Event 4: Bach and the Italians

Arioso Chamber Ensemble perform a program of Bach and Vivaldi, featuring Judit Molnar (soprano), Margaret Caley (violin), Belinda Manwaring (cello), Janet Brewer (harpsichord), and guest artist Benjamin Thorn (traverso).

Event 5: Peasant Cantata

A free, dramatised performance of Bach’s Peasant Cantata, BWV 212, in Hanna’s Arcade, performed by Sarah Adeney (soprano), Will Smidt (bass), April Kelson (violin), Colin Sholl (violin), Mia Baivucago (viola), Dan Stanley (cello), Benjamin Thorn (baroque flute), Nick Hadfield (horn), and Lena Schmalz (harpsichord).

Event 6: The Mysterious Carlo G

Camerata Antica present a program of works exploring the 17th century songbooks, featuring Anna Sandstrom (soprano), Matthew Manchester (cornetto) and David Drury (organ).

Event 7: Bach and the Edge of Sky

Baroque music rearranged in many styles and forms for keyboards (Warwick Dunham), classical and electric guitars (Stephen Tafra and Stephen Thorneycroft), drums (David van Tongeren), bass (Alex Elder), and with sound by Martin Hansford.

Event 8: Back to Bach

Thoroughbass present a program of music for recorder, viola da gamba and harpsichord from the height of the baroque. Featuring Joanne Arnott (recorder), Shaun Ng (viola da gamba), and Diana Weston (harpschord).

Event 9: EphenStephen

Guitar duo Stephen Tafra and Stephen Thorneycroft of EphenStephen perform their transcriptions of Scarlatti sonatas, Handel’s Water Music, Bach’s Italian Concerto and an original work by Benjamin Thorn, Three Preludes and a Fugue on B.A.C.H.

Event 10: Armidale Organ Crawl

An ambulatory concert featuring four organs (Uniting Church, St Paul’s, St Peter’s, Saints Mary and Joseph) featuring Warwick Dunham, David Drury, and Lena Schmalz. Like a pub crawl but with an organ recital in each church rather than a beer in each pub.

Event 11: Festival Evensong

Bach’s sacred music performed in the context for which it was written. Featuring St Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Choir.
