2016 Festival Program
Event 1: Fanfare - The Art of the Baroque Trumpet
John Foster (trumpet) and David Drury (organ) present a concert of music by Gottfried Reiché, Girolamo Fantini, Bach, Purcell, Giovanni Bonaventura Viviani, and Leopold Mozart.
Event 2: David Drury
Organist David Drury performs J. L. Krebs’ Fugue on the Magnificat as well as selected works by Bach and improvisations based on themes from school students.
Event 3: The Wondrous Machine
Songs by Bach, Purcell, Monteverdi, as well as improvisations performed by Ruth Strutt (vocals), Ash Hall (trumpet; flugelhorn); Steve Harris (drums and percussion); Steve Thorneycroft (guitars), and guest artist Anthony Schulz (accordion).
Event 4: Baroque Bar
Informal performances by festival musicians and friends at the St Kilda Hotel.
Event 5: The Peasant Cantata
Free dramatised performance of the Peasant Cantata in Hanna’s Arcade, performed by Greg McPhan (Schlendrian), Heloise Fortin (Lieschen), Phil Oxley (narrator), April Kelson (violin), Jodie Ostenfled (violin), Jacqui Thompson (viola), Robert Jackson (cello), Sarah Thorneycroft (double bass), Benjamin Thorn (baroque flute), and Lena Schmalz (harpsichord). This event also features a performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 (second movement) by PLC Strings, directed by Deirdre Rickards.
Event 6: Cello and Accordion - Bach and Beyond
Cellist Rachel Scott and accordion player Anthony Schulz perform arrangements of Bach, Stölzel, Frescobaldi, and Offenbach, as well as two original works composed by Richard Charlton and Anthony Schulz.
Event 7: Armidale Organ Crawl
An ambulatory concert featuring four organs (Uniting Church, St Paul’s, St Peter’s, Saints Mary and Joseph) featuring Warwick Dunham, Lena Schmalz, David Drury and Sjoerd van der Meulen. Like a pub crawl but with an organ recital in each church rather than a beer in each pub.
Event 8: Bach, Pergolesi, Poulenc
J. S. Bach’s Cantata 188, Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in g minor and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater featuring Kylie Constantine (soprano), Greg McPhan (bass), Ruth Strutt (mezzo soprano), Elias Wilson (tenor), Warwick Dunham (organ).
Event 9: Baroque Bar
Informal performances by festival musicians and friends at the Whitebull Hotel.
Event 10: Cello and Guitar
Cellist Rachel Scott and EphenStephen share a concert featuring Bach’s Suite for Solo Cello no. 2 , and original transcriptions of Bach, Handel and Rameau for guitar duo.
Event 11: Arioso
Arioso Chamber Ensemble present a concert of music by Bach, Giovanni Battista Bononcini and Handel. Featuring Judit Molnár (soprano), Margaret Caley (baroque violin), Belinda Manwaring (baroque cello), and Janet Brewer (harpsichord), with guest artists Jane Downer (baroque oboe; oboe d’amore), Benjamin Thorn (baroque flute), Margaret Butcher (baroque violin), and Joanna Fairs-Wu (baroque viola).
Event 12: Festival Evensong
Bach’s sacred music performed in the context for which it was written. Featuring St Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Choir, with Ruth Strutt (mezzo soprano), Greg McPhan (bass), April Kelson (violin), Jodie Ostenfeld (violin), Jacqui Thompson (viola), Robert Jackson (cello), Sarah Thorneycroft (double bass), Graeme Maddox (oboe), and Lena Schmalz (organ).
