2012 Festival Program

Event 1: Bach in Time

Peter Hagen (harpsichord) performs a program of Matthias Weckmann, Georg Böhm, Buxtehude, J. S. Bach, J. C. Bach and C. P. E. Bach.

Event 2: Bach Jazz

Works by Bach, Claude Bolling and Warwick Dunham performed in a jazz style. Featuring Nick Negerevich (flute), Rob Woodhouse (saxophone), Francesca Adreoni (double bass), Nik Glass (drums), and Warwick Dunham (piano).

Event 3: Terzina and Peter Hagen

J. S. Bach’s Sinfonie performed twice: first by solo harpsichord, and then in an arrangement for string trio by Camilla Tafra. Featuring Peter Hagen (harpsichord), Michael Poulton (violin), Philip Poulton (viola), and Camilla Tafra (cello).

Event 3a: Duo Piano Brandenburg

Pianists Jan-Piet Knijff and Lena Schmalz perform Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti nos 2 and 3.

Event 4: Alchemy

Margaret Caley (baroque violin/viola), Bridget Crouch (baroque violin), Sarah King (baroque violin), Louise King (baroque cello), and Janet Brewer (harpsichord) perform a program of works by and inspired by Bach.

Event 5: Minimalist Meditations

A concert of Australian contemporary minimalist meditative works inspired by Bach, featuring Alana Blackburn (recorder), Margaret Butcher (violin), Cécile Michels (recorder), Georgie Ostenfeld (cello), Stephen Tafra (guitar), Benjamin Thorn (harp/organ), and Stephen Thorneycroft (guitar).

Event 6: The Coffee Cantata

A free dramatised performance of Bach’s Coffee Cantata in Hanna’s Arcade, featuring Cécile Michels (narrator), Greg McPhan (Schlendrian), Héloïse Fortin (Lieschen), Margaret Butcher (violin), Jodie Ostenfeld (violin), Jacqui Thompson (viola), Georgie Ostenfeld (cello), Benjamin Thorn (flute), and Lena Schmalz (harpsichord). This event also features a performance of the Bach Double Violin Concerto by the PLC String Ensemble.

Event 7: Dancing with Bach

Selected works from the six cello suites performed by Louise King are paired with choreography by Louise Deleur to weave a story from the little known snippets of Johann Sebastian Bach’s life. Also featuring Rikki Mason as Bach, Melissa Tattam as Anna Magdalena, and Lydia Melmeth as Maria.

Event 8: Armidale Organ Crawl

An ambulatory concert featuring four organs (Uniting Church, St Paul’s, St Peter’s, Saints Mary and Joseph) featuring Jan-Piet Knijff, Terrence Hays, and Warwick Dunham. Like a pub crawl but with an organ recital in each church rather than a beer in each pub.

Event 9: Triptych

Austral Harmony perform diverse three-part works by Bach with Margaret Caley (violin), Jane Downer (baroque oboe and recorder), and Peter Hagen (harpsichord).

Event 10: Cello and Lute

Stephen Tafra (guitar) and Louise King (cello) share the stage performing J. S. Bach’s Lute Suite no. 3 and Cello Suite no. 5.

Event 11: Australian Baroque Brass

Australian Baroque Brass perform a program of Purcell, J. H. Schein, J. S. Bach, B. Marini, Gabrieli, Praetorius, J. G. Albrechtsbeger, and G. D. Speer. Featuring Warwick Tyrell (sackbut), Scott Kinmont (sackbut), Nigel Crocker (sackbut), Brett Page (sackbut), and Warwick Dunham (organ).

Event 12: Festival Evensong

Bach’s sacred music performed in the context for which it was written. Featuring St Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Choir, members of the Armidale Choral Society and Jan-Piet Knijff.
