2008 Festival Program

Event 1: Grand Opening Concert

Hans-Georg Wimmer and the Sydney Conservatorium Baroque Ensemble directed by Neal Peres da Costa perform an all-Bach program.

Event 2: Sydney Conservatorium Baroque Ensemble

Under the direction of Neal Peres da Costa, the Sydney Conservatorium Baroque Ensemble perform works by Locke, John Blow, Purcell and Handel.

Event 3: Revelations for the Soul

The Tall Poppeas, directed by Inara Molinari, perform works by Bach, Hildegard von Bingen, Telemann, Javier Fajardo, and Geminiani. Featuring Hester Hannah (soprano), Inara Molinari (mezzo), Sarah Sweeting (alto), Alana Blackburn (recorder), Clara Blazer (baroque cello) and Diana Weston (harpsichord).

Event 4: The Coffee Cantata

Free dramatised performance of the Coffee Cantata in Hanna’s Arcade, performed by Greg McPhan (Schlendrian), Kylie Constantine (Lieschen), Marion Barford (violin), Jhana Allan (violin), Hannah Rowland (viola), Camilla Tafra (cello), Benjamin Thorn (flute), and Lena Schmalz (harpsichord).

Event 5: The Voice and The Organ

Baritone Hans-Georg Wimmer joins with organist David Drury perform a program of Schütz, Boehm, Cazzati, de Grigny, Campra, Bach and Rossetti.

Event 6: Public Lecture: Arranging the Goldbergs

Stephen Tafra and Stephen Thorneycroft who form the guitar duo EphenStephen explain how they arranged Bach’s Goldberg Variations for two guitars.

Event 7: Australian Baroque Brass

A program of Bach, Leopold Mozart, Pezel, Purcell, Walther, Caldara, Handel, and Wagenseil by Australian Baroque Brass under the artistic direction of John Foster (baroque trumpet), Leanne Sullivan (baroque trumpet), Natalie Shea (alto),Warwick Tyrrell (sackbut), and David Drury (organ).

Event 8: BACH Improvisation Concert

To recreate the excitement of the improvised concerts of the baroque era, performers will take themes from the audience and see what they can make of them.

Event 9: The Goldberg Variations

EphenStephen perform their original arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

Event 10: Crossroads - Stringybark with Hans-Georg Wimmer

Zana Clarke (recorder/baroque violin), Sofia Debus (baroque violin), Margaret Butcher (baroque violin), Caroline Downer (viola da gamba), and Sheila Guymer (harpsichord) of Stringybark are joined by Benjamin Thorn (recorder/ocarina), Cecile Michels (recorder/ocarina/voice) and Hannah Rowland (baroque viola), in a program of Telemann, Mancini, Bach, and Couperin.

Event 11: Festival Evensong

Bach’s sacred music performed in the context for which it was written. Featuring St Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Choir, TAS Chapel Choir, NEGS Choir, Liz Elliz, Inge Southcott, Greg McPhan, Marion Barford, Jhana Allan, Hannah Rowland, Camilla Tafra, Graeme Maddox, David Rowe, Benjamin Thorn, and Lena Schmalz.
